When history fails to explain Sri Jagannath, philosophy comes in to help explaining Him. Lord Jagannath was first worshipped as ‘Purusottama”. In the later periods the name “Purusottama” was changed to “Jagannath” to suit different sections of religious belief such as Buddhists, Jains, Shaivas, Vaishnavas, Shaktas etc. The name “Jagannath” was already established during the reign of Anangabhima Dev III onwards, who is believed to have completed the construction of the Sri Jagannath temple that was started by Chodaganga Dev. The name “Jagannath” literally means “Lord of the Universe”, which He actually is in the eyes of the devotees.
