Chaturdha Murti

The principal deities worshipped in the Sri Jagannath Temple of Puri or Sri Mandir are Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Sudarshan. Together these four deities are known as “Chaturdha Murati”. They are worshipped on a raised platform called as “Ratnavedi” in the inner sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Three other small deities are also worshipped along with them in the Ratnavedi. They are ‘Madhava”, “Bhudevi” and “Sridevi”. The idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshan are made of Neem wood. The story regarding carving of these deities in wood can be found in Utkal Khanda of the Skanda Purana. These wooden idols are replaced periodically during “Navakalevara” which falls approximately every twelve to nineteen years when two months of “Ashadha” fall in a year.
